Walter & Zoniel’s Alpha-Ations are conceptual portraits, both metaphorical and narrative. Whilst capturing a uniquely alternative perspective of renowned persons with this unusual process with exceptionally long exposure times (up to 20 seconds) an honesty and intensity of the eyes exists in each piece.
The images are shot directly onto positive paper so each artwork has no negative or possibility of reproduction. They are then intricately hand-coloured and gilded in the artists’ personal style, ‘iconizing’ their subjects.
Reflecting upon the modern conceptions and uses of photography. The allusion to iconography is juxtaposed against an unmasked expression of being, giving the viewer both an intense and insightful connection to their subjects’ humanity and their exaltation at the same time, opening a body of questions about our current relationships with, and proliferation of, the Portrait in modern day life.
Shot on their WZBOX.3 hand-built camera characterized by a brass lens from the 1850’s and WZBOX.CASECAM.
